The Magnificent Peacocks: Hesslewood's Feathered Residents

Hesslewood Office Park isn't just about beautiful Grade II listed buildings and modern office spaces – it's also a haven for some of nature's most flamboyant creatures: peacocks. These stunning birds have become an integral part of our parkland, wowing visitors and employees alike with their vibrant plumage and distinctive calls.

Did You Know? Fascinating Peacock Facts

  • The Dazzling Display: That breath-taking fan of feathers isn't actually the peacock's tail. It's a train of elongated upper tail coverts. The true tail feathers are shorter and support the train.

  • More Than Meets the Eye: Only male peacocks have those elaborate trains. Females, called peahens, are more subtly coloured. We believe their top be just one peahen at Hesslewood, and she is a beauty in white.

  • A Symphony of Sounds: Those loud calls you hear echoing across Hesslewood? That's the peacocks communicating. Their vocalisations can serve as warnings, mating calls, or simple expressions. Even as we write, we can hear those mating calls, loud and proud!

  • Feathered Royalty: Peacocks are native to India and Sri Lanka. They've been associated with royalty and luxury for centuries.

Hesslewood's Own Peacock Parade

The peacocks at Hesslewood Office Park are wild, and roam freely, having been here longer than we have! They sure do add a touch of exotic elegance to the grounds. Our most famous resident is Penelope, a white peahen who seems to particularly enjoy the area around the estate office and up towards Hull and East Riding Fertility. Penelope is a proud mother peahen, having raised five peachicks last year. Whilst they’re now sampling some independence, they can still often be seen following mum dutifully around the park.

We're not exactly sure how many peacocks call Hesslewood Office Park home, but their presence is undeniable. During mating season (which we're still in the midst of!), the males' calls become especially prominent. While some might find their cries a tad loud, we (mostly) consider it part of the charm of having these majestic birds as our neighbours.

A Note on Peacock Etiquette

While our peacocks are accustomed to humans, it's important to remember that they are wild animals. Please admire them from a distance and avoid feeding them. This helps ensure their well-being and maintains the natural balance of our parkland ecosystem.

We hope you enjoy sharing Hesslewood Office Park with our feathered friends as much as we do. They're a reminder of the unique blend of history, nature, and modern workspace that makes our office park so special.
